   Latest titbits...

13/3/10 Coming live from the Internet Cafe at the Albany AGM...
under a pall of smoke from a bushfire started by a Ulyssian's Goldwing which was sacrificed to the gods (we think the member is OK but still in hospital at the moment)
Newflash... Nev has been awarded life membership.

The Renmark River Run is back.
From Bob Woodfull, Director, Adelaide Chapter Harley Owners Group SA Inc.:
I am writing to you to let you know of a up-and-coming event being held on the 20th March at the Renmark Sporting Complex. The Adelaide Chapter Harley Owners Group in conjunction with Renmark Sporting Club and Renmark-Paringa Council are hosting the 2010 River Run and Rock. An event similar to this was hosted by the Vietnam Vets from 1996, with the last one being 2005. The admission price for bikers will be only $15.00. This will include an event pin for the first 400 riders/pillions who register for the event. All proceeds will be donated equally to three charities, MDA, Childhood Cancer Assoc and Make A Wish.
We have arranged free camping (with showers) at the sporting complex for bikers who wish to camp on site. There will be some great entertainment from 4 bands from 3pm until midnight.
For those who want to ride up on Saturday 20th there will be a departure point from the Caltex South Road extension, Wingfield at 9.30am, arriving in Renmark approx 2.30pm.

5/2/10 Well the Adelaide branch AGM has come and gone. The committee largely remains the same except that Chrissie & Vanessa put their hands up to jointly replace Russell as quartermaster. It was agreed that quartermistress was a valid word. (I'll refrain from commenting on how many women it takes to replace a man. :)
Thanks to those brave ladies for dobbing themselves in.

1/1/2010 Happy, prosperous, and lucky New Year all you old farts.

The Ho Ho Ho ride was great, with a great BBQ at the end of it. But only Bundi's pictures got into the album. I saw quite a few happy snappers, so where are your good shots?

19/12/09 Piper is starting a lonely hearts club: "Janet, a single young 59yo member from times past looking to make new friends wants to get back on a bike as a pillion. Has her own riding gear. Lives in Ridgehaven. Can you help? Phone 08 8396 4588"

6/10/09 From masterbrewer: Following Andrew Mills excitement with a recent SA Adv Riders day ride, he indicated that there may be a few others interested in getting "dirty".
Here's a ride report on a recently completed 3,000km to the remote far northwest outback town in New South Wales, Tibooburra, outback central Australia for the recent Ulysses Adventure Riders Rally.
My poor ol' TDM suffered a bit this trip over the rough, rocky ground: shagged fork seals, staked rear tyre, nearly lost bottom rear shocker bolt (I'm feeling lucky with that incident) & a cooked battery, but never-the-less a bloody good adventure. Hope to get her turned around for the next trip at the end of October to Pooncarie/Mungo http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=463462.

21/9/09 Corner marshalling: Piper has been chatting to the cops.
"I have made calls to the SA Police Traffic Department and explained what we do and how we do the corner marshalling.
Their advice is that a person can be charged under the LAWFUL FLOW OF TRAFFIC ACT only if the bike and or rider are obstructing traffic.
The way we do the corner marshalling is well off to the side of the road, or against the gutter with the indicators on, or hands out, indicating the intended direction of the ride and sitting on our motorcycles, is fine.
The three separate Police Officers who I spoke with, do not see a problem in how we do our corner marshalling.

From Neville Gray:
On Wednesday last, the Federal Minister for Transport, the Hon. Albanese launched the Good Gear Guide for motorcycle and scooter riders. It was the culmination of several years work by the Australian Motorcycle Council and the Federal Governments Motorcycle Safety Consultative Committee. It was written by researcher Ms Liz DeRome as a result of a grant from the Federal Government. A link to the file is here. It can be downloaded as a full file or shortened version.

The wearing of adequate protective clothing for motorcycle and scooter riders is a big topic at the moment. The simple act of putting on this stuff can have great benefits in the event of a 'get off'. We often see scooter riders getting about in skimpy gear and thongs - if only they could visit the skin wound section of the Adelaide Hospital, they would change their thinking forever.
This article speaks for itself.
I realize we are probably speaking to the converted here as the vast majority of Ulyssians wear adequate protective gear.

To add to that Nev...
The US 2009 Iron Butt Rally has ended. Margaret Peart, a Ulyssian from Tassie was a finisher. But sadly another Australian, Davo Jones, wasn't. From the Iron Butt website:
"Australian Davo Jones died at a local trauma center as the result of a head injury he sustained following a collision with a large deer just hours before the end of the Rally. A local sheriff deputy was first on the accident scene on US-95 just south of the U.S./Canadian border. The officer, who found Davo attempting to get up, reported that Davo was traveling less than 45 mph at the time of the deer strike, but he was not wearing his helmet. Other witnesses at the scene confirm that the helmet was strapped to the bike. What might otherwise have been an accident that the rider would have walked away from, has resulted in a tragedy.
